Okay so we get a lot of questions about movie sword fighting techniques and tips. So we’re going to share a few things with you. Now I’m actually an experienced stunt coordinator turned full-time director. This is something I planned from the beginning of my career up to including attending a graduating film school as a director. Along my journey, I learned that being a stunt coordinator made me a better director and being a director made me a better stunt coordinator. Now how this benefits you is that I can share with you insights and experience from both sides of the camera as well as through all phases of production. cool fancy sword moves, fancy moves swords, fancy moves sword and tricks, movie sword training technique tips, movie sword training books, sword fight training movie, movie sword training how, movie sword training online YouTube free, Dillon Wilson, CBT Stunt Alliance, Movie Sword Master, Movie Sword Expert.

When we thought about what will benefit you the most, we decided to do a six-part free video series that will teach you some of the basics so you learn enough about uh movie sword fighting to put together choreography for your real, for upcoming auditions and even your own content for actual performances and highly competitive auditions. You need more training like what we provide in our movie sword fighting master course. Why does this work? Because for self tapes, many sword auditions, mocaps and performances, you just have to look like you know, how to use a sword. If you’re not the lead or a featured fighter, you usually get to throw anywhere from zero to two strikes and then you’re killed. Check out this clip from the video game the Witcher.

Now, how many strikes does each performer get to throw in that action sequence? Exactly. So in this video, we’re going to cover cool and fancy sword moves and combos that you can use in your real performances and even your own content. So first, we’ll cover some basic cool sword moves and then second, we’ll cover putting them together into cool and fancy sword combos that you can put right into your reel.

Movie Sword Training – Cool & Fancy Sword Moves and Tricks Tips 1

Alright, so first, do a full body warm up on your own, stretch your whole body out whatever way you have of warming up. After your body’s warmed up and you kind of loose, make sure your shoulders and everything stretch we’re going to finish up with a warm up or stretch of your wrist and here’s how we do it. We take our hand like this and we take the other hand to kind of trap the elbow and the hip and we just kind of roll rotate it to the side and we do it slowly you see how it’s kind of stretching it? And then once we do it, you see this, relax, we put the hand here and kind of roll it back and forth, we can angle so you can see that right, what this does is it stretches the hand, you don’t want things that are sharp and jerky. Some systems do that and then over time you wind up injuring yourself.

The last portion is starting from the form, you want to kind of massage down to the fingertips and back up, how to get the blood circulating and relax everything on the other side, trap the elbow in the hip and bend those fingers back. Try to touch the fingertips to the forearm, feel that stretch I’m getting in there, let it come back on its own hand here, same thing try to touch the fingers through this inner forearm, kind of rotate it back and forth, let it come back on its own and then same thing. It’s going to be here and kind of those muscles nice and relaxed, there’s a lot that’s going to be done with the wrist so you want your wrist nice and flexible especially when you’re working with swords because that weight will get to you. Be surprise, even the lightweight sword can actually cause some type of injury. So go ahead and do that now.

Movie Sword Training – Cool & Fancy Sword Moves and Tricks Tips 2

The next thing is we’re going to put on eye protection. Remember in our first video for the things that have our eye protection, that provides protection on your eyes from all sides and even a protective cup. A protective cup, you again, you just wear with you’re working with a partner, by yourself it’s up to you, if you’re gonna put the protective gear, yeah when you’re working with a sword especially doing the type of moves you’re about to do. You’re swinging the sword around and everything, put on eye protection, you only have one set of eyes. A lot of stuff performers that was complaining I don’t want to put on these goggles, they fog up, well you can get a spray if you actually spray on the goggles and wipe it wipe it off, it keeps them from fogging up or you can get goggles that don’t fog up, you only have one set of eyes. Now, you’re not exactly the coolest looking almost like a superhero, now you know yet they do a good job of covering your eyes. So let’s go ahead and secure your crop training sword. cool fancy sword moves, fancy moves swords, fancy moves sword and shield, movie sword training technique tips, movie sword training books, sword fight training movie, movie sword training how, movie sword training online YouTube free, Dillon Wilson, CBT Stunt Alliance, Movie Sword Master, Movie Sword Expert.

Movie Sword Training – Cool & Fancy Sword Moves and Tricks Tips 3: Wrist Circles

And the first technique we’re going to learn is, are called wrist circles. Wrist circles are the most fundamental um cool fancy sword moves that you can do and the way you perform them, I’m actually going to take the microphone off a few times because you know, as I’m moving this microphone here, it’ll get caught up with it. So you’ll see me taking it off after I finish talking. So there’s the way you perform a wrist circle with a sword, is you’re going to hold it so you just have about a little bit on the bottom and we’re just going to do this with one hand. Now not with two right, so we’ll hold it here and we’ll hold it out like this low, about waist height and what we’re going to do is we’re going to do a circle with the kids for the front, just like that. Now, if you notice in CBT, we keep our hands closed, some systems open their hand like that and what it does, you, you it looks kind of cool and uh it looks fancy however what happens in combat is opponents can exploit that and as you’re here, they hit it and then there goes your weapon, yeah either way it’s fine this is for filming tv.

So the first one again, keep the hand here and just going to do forward circles, I’ll slow it down, you can see it from the front, you see how the track of the sword, I’m not doing this like I bought myself a head. Again, why we practice with PVC and not steel, you want to keep it so it’s tracked on the side right, it can be straight up and down or even could be angled out slightly, so that is called a forward circle because you notice, just going forward. Now we’re going to do a rearward circle and just like it sounds, see that, that’s a rearward circle. Again, you know you can have the open hand, we don’t recommend it because we do it like this. Alright, so that’s the rearward circle, now we do everything, we do on one side, we do on the other.

Slow the sound again, this is the forward circle that waist height, this is the rearward circle right. Now, the other thing you can do with this when we move on to the next one, is you can vary the height, doesn’t have to stay at waist height. Start at waist height and you can raise it up, see that, so just by moving your, your changing the height of your hands, you can change it, this is a reverse or rearward circle and front of front. Alright, so that is the, those are called circles uh wrist circles forward and rearward. Alright, so we’re going to incorporate some of the strikes.

Movie Sword Training – Cool & Fancy Sword Moves and Tricks Tips 4: Elbow Circles

Now, alright, so we’re going to incorporate number three, our elbow circles into a right one or right four. So here is a an elbow circle, this is a wrist circle, see how the only the wrist is moving, that’s what you learned before I started calling wrist circles right, these are elbow circles, you see how the motion is moving from the elbow, not from the wrist, wrist elbow, shoulder. Alright, so these are going to be elbow circles, see that’s bigger and we’re going to take it into an actual strike. I’m going to take it to an angle one and angle four, alternating, so elbow circle, so think one elbow circle, one actually, actually, we’ll do four first and then one, so elbow circle four, elbow circle one, I’ll do that from the side, elbow circle four, elbow circle one. Again, from the front, elbow circle four, elbow circle one and I doing the left elbow circle as your elbow circle, this is on the other side of the elbow circle. For the four elbow circle four, elbow circle one, so it prefaces a strike and you circle near yourself and then you extend for the strike, right here. It’ll do a couple more times from the side elbow circle four, elbow circle one. Once again, elbow circle four, elbow circle one  and just practice that, the smoother you get, you see these all linked together, so your body becomes used to moving with the weapon with the sword and it becomes easier to start linking them all together. cool fancy sword moves, fancy moves swords, fancy moves sword and shield, movie sword training technique tips, movie sword training books, sword fight training movie, movie sword training how, movie sword training online YouTube free, Dillon Wilson, CBT Stunt Alliance, Movie Sword Master, Movie Sword Expert.

Movie Sword Training – Cool & Fancy Sword Moves and Tricks Tips 5

Number six is like a variation of number five where once again, we’re going to do a forward circle and then we’re going to switch hands behind our back, yet you notice how before we kept spinning, we’re not going to spin now. We’re just going to turn 180 degrees and stay there and the arm is going, the arms are going to go in a circle and you’ll see what I’m talking about a moment, I’ll do it again. Close the camera with the microphone on and then I’ll step back, so you can see me, so we’re going to start here with a forward circle, we’re going to turn 180 degree and we’re going to stay here, we’re going to switch hands. Now you see how the hands going up, remember, before we did those circles and varied the height, now they’re here and I’m going to catch it here on this, on the center line and switch. Remember, every time we pass, it’s always on the center line, see that, so from here, I’m passing here, passing here, passing here, passing here, and we can also reverse it. Alright, now I’ll sit the the microphone down and I’ll back up so you can see me. I’ll go slow initially and then I’ll speed it up and that’s how it looks, remember the key thing is, is remembering how to switch hands, is always just rubbing the back of the other hand and always when you cross your center line, that imaginary line that your body rotates around, that’s where you want to, want to pass the sword from one hand to the next.

Movie Sword Training – Cool & Fancy Sword Moves Tips 6

Alright, number nine are earth position, figure eights, all the figures you learned before are had to do with heaven position, so if the blade is facing up in the hand, we call that heaven position. So that’s a heaven position figure eight, right, if the blade is facing downwards in earth position, so that’s pointing to the ground, we call that earth position figure eight. So we’re gonna do the same thing and uh and do earth position figure eight and the same thing applies, same rules apply, the pommel leads first and it stays on the center line. See that there are gonna be some times, when you will want to switch especially for a cool movie stuff, you’re gonna want to switch, you know from heaven position to earth position, right, it’s just the nature of, of and it looks much smoother when you do it.

So once again, we’re here, we’re going to cover how to switch. What I just did in a little bit, yet this is heaven position. Pay attention to the tip of the sword, you don’t want this happening, you don’t want this happening, so think about guiding it with the bottom of your hand, because that’s where what you’re aiming with. So you can go here, because that’s actually how you’ll be striking even in combat, if you had angle, angle ones, angle fours, angle threes, angle two, you’re guiding it with your, with your hand. So these are again earth position figure eights. I’m switching hands again. I switch hands just by doing this and do the same thing, I’ll do it from the side, from this side and these again are very nice to switch up. You see how I just, I switch with the hands like that, they’re very nice to be able to switch back and forth and add a lot of style to your, to your performance. Alright, so angle as you were.

Movie Sword Training – Books & Movies Tips 7

Number 15 is, uh, deals with footwork. Actually, fifteen and sixteen deal, with the footwork and what this is going to do, is give you the foundation for doing a really cool move that we call the body spin, yet if you don’t know how to do it properly, you’re going to fall. You’ll be off balance with all crazy and stuff, right, so the way it works, I’m going to explain it and then I’m going to demonstrate a few times without wearing a microphone. But if you remember before in our earlier videos, we explained that in CBT, we move like on railroad tracks, right, so whenever we’re not, you know, walking and crossing our feet like this or something, we don’t move like that, we always maintain our feet shoulder width apart and we move on railroad tracks, right. cool fancy sword moves, fancy moves swords, fancy moves sword and shield, movie sword training technique tips, movie sword training books, sword fight training movie, movie sword training how, movie sword training online YouTube free, Dillon Wilson, CBT Stunt Alliance, Movie Sword Master, Movie Sword Expert.

This is important to remember this, so if I’m moving, think of seeing that railroad track in the grass, so here’s how we do the body turn so when we step with the left foot, I’m going to turn counterclockwise using my right foot because the next step, if you notice, my right foot usually stays here, right, yet when I’m going to do a body turn, I’m going to step on the same railroad track as the left with my heel up in the air, my foot pointed in that direction. So here’s how it’s going to look, so I step with the left, normally, I would step with the right, here or maintain the railroad track. Now, I’m going to step with the left and now I’m going to step with the right, you see that, now let’s see it from the side, I start with the right like that, see, my heel is up and I’m on the ball of my foot, so when I do that, I’m on the same railroad track, I’m looking at the target and as I spin, I’m going to spot the target and then I’m staying here on this railroad track, right. Now, what just happened was I took linear energy and turn it into circular energy so I can actually keep spinning round and round and round and I’ll demonstrate this, it’s actually easier to do this. So if I’m here, I can spin, then I’m already, microphone now and spin right, so when you do it correctly, that’s what happens, it’s actually easier for you to keep spinning around so if you notice, each time when I did it, I took a step, I stepped on a railroad track, I spun around, I spun around and I’m still on the same railroad track facing the target and that’s because of the way, that we maintain the railroad tracks and the way we position a foot. cool fancy sword moves, fancy moves swords, fancy moves sword and shield, movie sword training technique tips, movie sword training books, sword fight training movie, movie sword training how, movie sword training online YouTube free, Dillon Wilson, CBT Stunt Alliance, sword Tricks, Movie Sword Master, Movie Sword Expert.

If I were to step with the right foot and instead with the left foot on the same railroad track and try to spin, I’d be off balance and I would fall, right, because it’s still trying to maintain linear energy, what we wish to do is go straight and then spin it and that’s why we can do successive turns. So make sure when you’re stepping this foot steps in front of the right, on the same railroad track, like this. Look at the target, look at the target, spin on that foot and your weight will naturally carry back around, I said I’m on the same railway track, if the elixir was a railroad track, you’ll see me on it. Now, I’m going to do maybe about four of these body spins on the left so if you notice, you know as I’m doing that, there’s this, grass out here and the ground is uneven and everything, yet even with that, it still works just fine. I’ll do it one last time with the sword, just so you can see how that looks, yet the key thing is knowing the footwork, once you have the footwork down, the arms are easy to do because they’ll naturally fill in. You pay attention to my footwork as I do it and that’s how it is, so practice that footwork, you get that footwork down, that launches so many things and when we get into the actual combinations, you’re going to see especially when we start showing you the same things with the actual swords and not just PVC, we’ll do it with katanas, we’ll do it with European longswords, we’ll do it with some African blades, too, you’re going to be amazed at how it looks. So practice this footwork and get it down smoothly, take your time and take it out one step at a time.

Movie Sword Training – Books & Movies Tips 8

Okay, so the last basic combo we’re going to show you is again, footwork, yet it’s advanced footwork and it’s number sixteen, called the body spin jump step. This is a very dramatic, very high production value move, you have to get number fifteen down first before you can do this one. Because uh, it builds on number fifteen, and so, how this one works is the exact same as number fifteen where it was the body spin, yet like before. Actually, I’ll set the sword down like before we’re going to take a step on the railroad track, right here, our railroad track so we’re going to take a step on the railroad track, we’re going to step here with the other foot. Now before, we did was we spotted and we spun on that rear foot, if you see we spun on the rear foot and it put us right back here.

Well the difference is now, instead of spinning once, we’re here, we’re spinning, we’re going to push off and hop with this knee, so it looks like this, we’re going to raise the knee and push off. See that we’re going to raise the knee and push off with his base foot, so that we finish in that same position, so when we finish in the same position like this, yet this foot’s going to be there, and so it kind of looks like this, without the spin, it looks just like this, I’m going to lift the knee up. Now I’m going to lift this knee up, you see that I’ll move back a bit, that’s what we’re doing, hopping, lifting knee up, push off, land on this foot then laying with this foot, lift this knee up, push off with this leg, land with this foot, then land with that foot and so we’ll demonstrate that, now with the body spin nice and slow. Do that and I’ll do that from the other side, step, step, it’s going to be the knee, then the jump step, right and you can see if you get that down. The application is probably with a sword, when you’re here, boom, right. Those are, those flying moves that you see, some of the performers doing the air, you know like in star wars movies, video games, I’ll do it, I’ll take the microphone off and do it a few times further back.

So you can see it. So that’s number 16 called the body spin and jump step again, it’s advanced, yet, if you practice number fifteen first and you’ll get a feel for your body and then practice this one, you’ll have it. So we showed you nine, here yeah, there are a lot more in the master course for a variety of really cool and very cinematic stuff, so these are some of the basics of your cool sword combos, choose a couple and practice them until you’re smooth. Next, we’re going to show you how to put them all together to make some really cool six sword combinations.

Movie Sword Training – Books & Movies Tips 9

So to finish up, let’s learn some cool and fancy sword combos for your reel. Okay, so let’s get started, pause this video at any time to try these out for yourself. Cool and fancy sword combo number eight is the first one that’ll incorporate some kicks in it. The key thing to understand is how the kick is launched, so watch my feet after the body spin, I’m going to lean river and just do a ball thrust kick. This is what we call in CBT, just lean rearward and thrust with the ball of our foot, yet, instead of just doing that, since we’re moving, we’re going to take a half step forward with the rear foot and put it next to the, the lead foot. It’s like this, do that, so I’m going to half step in, boom, yet, to make it even faster because we have so much momentum, this is going to hop to that position. Do that, so I pick this up and drop it down and kick so that’ll be the key thing that you see at the end of the choreography, I’ll demonstrate this now. cool fancy sword moves, fancy moves swords, fancy moves sword and shield, movie sword training technique tips, movie sword training books, sword fight training movie, movie sword training how, movie sword training online YouTube free, Dillon Wilson, CBT Stunt Alliance, sword Tricks, Movie Sword Master, Movie Sword Expert.

Movie Sword Training – Books & Movies Tips 10

Okay here is cool and fancy sword combo number nine. This is another one that uses, uh the footwork that we learned in the basic moves that you’ll see how it all combines together. Just watch it, I’ll do it slowly and then you just practice it beat by beat.

Movie Sword Training – Books & Movies Tips 11

Alright, so cool and fancy sword combo eleven. This one, again, you just got to watch it and there’s a lot to explain, it’s a lot to try to explain, just observe it. We’re still leveraging mainly ones and fours. So you notice with most of the strikes, they’re still ones and fours, you can switch those up and make them any other angle that you want, any of the fifteen angles that you like, yet right now, just to keep it simple, we’re keeping them ones and fours for the most part.

So I’ll demonstrate it, now, do you now have some solid cool and fancy sword combos to put together, some really good sword action sequences for your real auditions or even your own content. We showed you a few here, yet there are twelve in the master course, more involved, even fancier and sure to get the attention of any casting director or stunt coordinator.
