Now we get a lot of questions about how to get started as an action actor or stunt performer. So we’re gonna share a few things with you.
Last thing before we go to the training, the video instructionals in this free video series are actually taken from our online master course.
These are meant to be done after you perform the full -body warm -up, which we teach how to do in a master course.
How To perform The Chair Fall Stunt sideways Tip 1:
All right, in this instructional, we’re going to cover how to perform the side -facing chair fall.
This is a relatively simple stunt. A lot of stunts are simple to start performing them, especially on camera. Relatively simple in that, since you’ve already learned in the previous instructional how to do a side roll, it’s just a way of leveraging the side roll.
That’s why we say it’s simple. If you don’t know the side roll, ain’t so simple. Yet since you learned the side roll in the previous instructional, now you’re going in the application of it. This is a stunt that applies and can be used across all genres.
And it’s all about how you act during the training.
bring the performance of it as well as the act out afterwards. So remember the amazing performance formula. We’re always going to make sure we do the proper landing first. And we’re going to demonstrate it first and break it down step by step.
Yet it’s all about how you customize your performance to make it for the project. So let’s go ahead and do the side we’re facing chair falll now. So very simple. We’re sitting in the chair. And instead of sitting like this, we’re going to say that we’re sitting sideways.
So the chair is like this now. And we sit sideways in the chair. This is the key thing. Now, as it can be anything that initiates it, it can be a fight scene, a car crashing through a window, anything.
And all of a sudden, you get hit, you can start getting knocked over. And that’s it. So we’re going to break it down on how to actually perform that safely. So once again, it’s called the sideways facing because we’re actually sitting sideways in the chair.
Again, you’d be at a bar, a cafe, an office, whatever. And so what happens, something comes in. It can be you. You know, you’re drunk or whatever. And you unbalance the chair. Now, once the chair starts to become unbalanced, what you’re going to do is you’re going to reach out with both arms above clearing the chair, making sure your elbows are above the chair so you don’t hit your elbows on the chair.
When your hands touch the ground, you’re going to step around wide with the rear leg. And what that does, it helps your knees and everything to clear the chair as well. And it gives you a wide base of support.

And you’re going to pause in that moment, and you’re essentially in a pushup position. That’s what you’re doing. you’re going to a push -up position. Once you’re in a push -up position, it’s just a standard side roll and you just side roll right out of it.
Now again, you can make it look as brutal or violent or as comedic as possible. So let’s go ahead and continue. So we’re here, the arms reach out, we step around. You see we’re off, we’ve cleared the chair and now we’re executing the side roll.
Very simple. The chair will usually fall like that.
It’s grass out here, so it’s stuck in the mud. Let’s do that one more time, and then we’ll do on the other side. Again, very simple stunt. Using all genres of film. Again, you can be working at the desk or talking to somebody and someone in a motorcycle crashes the window.
Voila. And now we’ll do it on the other side. All right, so like we always teach in all of our classes as a stunt performer or action actor, you always wish to be ambidextrous. So you always train a few things on both sides.

Do not be a person that can only do it on one side because you’ll get comfortable doing it on one side in a day to shoot something will change and need to shoot. You need you to do it on the other side.
If you look horrible doing on the other side, that’s not good. So what we’ll do, we’re going to do this more slowly just so that you can see how it looks again. A simple stunt you put in your reel put in projects again.
It makes it gives more action to a project and really can take that scene to the next level. So do very slowly, broken down step by step to ensure that you learn it safely, easily and quickly. Lastly, we’re going to share with you a few pro tips before we do check this out.

So here it’s tilted, arms reach out, step over. We’re in the pushup position. Now we go to the roll, the side roll. One last time. Very simple. Especially when you know how to do the side roll. A lot of the, all the pratfalls and rolls that you learn in pre -instructionals, that’s why we taught those to you.
Because they’re very versatile and they have a wide range of applications.
We don’t need to use, you know, higher -risk type stuff. They look just as good or better, they’re safer, and you can do them over and over again without any concern about injury. So this time we’ll do it more at performance speed.
We’ll say that a, visualize a car coming in, smashing into a window in a cafe or something, and knocks me over. So yeah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, crash! Crash! And that’s it. Very simple.
Again, once you have some of the basics, all the basics you’ve learned have a wide range of applications. So stop the video now and give the side -facing chair fall a try. Make sure you like this video and smash that subscribe button so you don’t miss out on our future video series.
