Last thing before we go to the training, the video instructionals in this free video series are actually taken from our online master course.

These are meant to be done after you perform the full -body warm -up, which we teach how to do in a master course.

How To Use Break Away Glass In Stunts Tip 1:

Alright  now we’re going to learn how to use a breakaway glass or mirror. These are usually things the action sequences or stunts that are leveraged in action movies, you know for the most part, usually within the realm of fight scenes.

And sometimes, they’re using dramas as well more to denote someone’s frustration you know some emotion at the actors feeling. Take a look at the clip next to see this in action.

Alright, so to perform this, again this is a good one too, even if you have it in your reel or something. This is a good one, it gives directors and writers ideas. The first thing you wish to do, if you remember from the instruction we did with breakaway glass bubbles, is once again you wish to wear a head covering.

So something could be a hat, it could be a bandana like you saw in the video clip. The person had a bandana on. The, you know, anything, you know, because again resin can still cut you. Just because it’s not actual glass doesn’t mean that it can’t cut you, you get seriously injured with it.

So we’re gonna say this is our mirror, we have this so we can do repeated hits to demonstrate it to you. It could be a mirror, it could be a window, like a window of a car or something like that. And what you’re going to do, once again you’re gonna hit with the crown of your forehead, this portion, because it needs to be a hard surface.

How To Use Break Away Glass In Stunts Tip 2:

Don’t hit it, you know, flat on like this, that’d be bad because you will still break your nose, right? So you got the forehead slightly, you know, the, the point of the forehead, the crown of the forehead is what you’re hitting with, you’re gonna slightly tuck your chin because without your chin tucked, you’ll still tend to hit flat.

So the main thing is you want to have your chin tucked slightly because without your chin tucked, if you’re like this, when you go and hit with your forehead, you’ll still hit flat. So you tuck your chin slightly, you’re going to go on like this.

Now here’s the key thing, when you go in, you’re going to hit, break the glass, the breakaway glass or mirror, and then pull back out, right? And we’re going to demonstrate that now.

Just like that. Smash in and then instantly come back out.

Now one of the key things to know is that when you make the hit or the bare mind is when you smash your face into or your forehead into it, don’t rub. Don’t take it, smash your forehead into it and rub even slightly side to side because especially in the case of a mirror, more so than like a window, actually the window too because depending on the window, there maybe some piece is still there and when you do that, that’s when you get cut.

What is sugar glass used for in movies?, Stunt glass

Once you’re cut production shut down, especially if you’re an actor well, you know if you’re a stunt performer. They need your face in the scene or some more footage of you, now you got a cut on your forehead you’re bleeding production shuts down And so you need to be aware of this where head covering when you can.

Once in a while it may happen that you can like you can’t put your hair down or something like that just be aware of it in and out. Now If it’s a fight scene like if it’s not something like you saw in the in the video clip where you know.

The people are upset and bashing themselves. If it’s a fight scene where your partner puts their hand on the back of your neck and smashes your head into it. Here’s the thing to remember.

You are the one still doing it, not the partner.

And this is especially the case where if you’re working with another actor who has not had this training, they don’t know. They’ll actually think to push your head into it. People doing stuff like that are the ones who’ve actually caused Stunt Performer to get killed in the past because they don’t know what to do and they do the wrong thing.

Right? The way you always explain it and the way you have to think about it is you are a fly on your neck. It’s just like if someone picked up a leaf and just sat a leaf that can stay there. Picked up a leaf and sat the leaf on his shoulder.

The leaf is just along for the ride. That’s how you describe it. You’re either just a fly sitting on my neck. You’re doing nothing else. It’ll give me any energy. Right? They’re here and they’re selling.

They’re riding the back of your neck in. So this is how it should look, same exact way. Their hand is here just along for the ride. And you take it and what you do is kind of arch back a little bit into their hand.

They’re just gonna form a frame. They don’t have to grab, they just form a frame. So you go here like they just grabbed you or grabbed you by the hair or something, and then you go in and pull out. Just like that.

How to use sugar glass mirrors or windows reddit

So that’s how you smash your face into a breakaway window or breakaway mirror. Make sure that you use something that you can practice with over and over again. A piece of cardboard box is ideal because it simulates it and you can actually see the impact of your forehead.

If you’re hitting like this, you’ll feel it in your nose, you know, if you’re hitting incorrectly. So you can practice it on a thin cardboard box like this to get the technique down. So stop the video now and give this a try.
